I love when I get an idea of how to make something from materials I have around the house. I made a vase out of a glass vanilla bean container and a left over piece of wood we had in the garage. Of course, I could have gone out and bought a cheap single bud vase. But I love that this is handcrafted from recycled materials. I love it! It looks great on my dinner table-
You can make one too! You just need to find a few things and you are ready to go!
Step 1: Envision What Can Be
Sometimes you just get inspired by materials you have laying around your house. You don’t have to use the same materials I did; you might have something even more perfect at home. I bought a vanilla bean at the grocery store and it came in this incredible glass vial! After I used my vanilla bean, I washed and saved the vial. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it, but I wanted to use it because I thought it was so beautiful. So, I left it around the kitchen for a week or so, and then had my idea.
I also made one vase that I wrapped with my handmade glass beads. You can pretty much wrap anything around your vial! I used a bit of epoxy at the top and bottom to secure the wire. Then, we made one for 4 individual bud vases!
Step 2: Gather Your Supplies!
Here is what you will need to complete your project:
- A glass or plastic vial/ tube
- A piece of wood to serve as the base for the vile / tube
- I used a round piece, but you could use any shape.
- A small piece of practice wood
- Sandpaper to sand down and finish your wood
- Some varnish or paint to finish your wood
- A drill and a drill bit that is the same or similar dimensions as the vial
- Epoxy or Crazy-Glue (gel or thicker type)
Step 3: Mark Where You Are Going to Put Your Hole and DRILL!
Prep your wood so it looks the way you want it to look. Sand down and then use a natural stain or paint to finish your piece of wood. Choose your drill bit so that is as close as possible in size to the diameter of your vile / tube. Practice on some spare wood first so that you are able to make a vertical hole (straight up and down, not at an angle or tube will sit at an angle). Don’t go all the way to the bottom of your wood.
Step 4: Glue!
You are so close to being done! Use 5 Minute Epoxy or Crazy Glue to glue in your vial / tube. Make sure your vial is straight. Let dry.
Step 5: USE Your New Vase!
Find a flower and some greens to put in your new vase! Stand back and smile!!
